Chapter 31

Question of Trust

Rob Bell

The bunker

Colorado

Down at the hen battery, I attempted to work with Joseph and the team. Try as I may, it was hard for me to do anything without having the feeling I was in the way. Joseph gave his instructions at the beginning of the shift, and everyone including Joseph went about their duties, putting in the graft, either cleaning out the batteries, feeding the hens, or collecting the eggs. I didn’t even need to go near the milking cows, with Joseph already having organized some of the team to milk them.

“Joseph, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“What did Jason do all day?”

“Jason? He was like the proverbial porch dog.”

“I’ve not heard that one.”

“It’s reserved for them that sits on their asses all day, barking orders. Only thing he ever did was sit and watch until it was time to take the eggs and milk to the bridge. Even when you told him to do things, he’d pass it on for us to do unless it was a stint in the excavator or driving one of the other vehicles. He only put in the graft if you were with him.”

“Didn’t you get along?”

“Not really, though I didn’t wish him dead, God rest his soul. He sucked up to your dad from the day he arrived, but none of us were fooled. We avoided him in the common room on account of his sick jokes, some racist.”

Rob felt the heat rise in his cheeks.

“I’d never have guessed,” I said. Then thinking about it, I’d seen them arguing on more than one occasion, but I’d put it down to a power struggle.

“Well, no you wouldn’t. would you? He’d watch what he’d say around you the few times you talked with him. Same with your dad.”

“What sort of work did you do before the disaster?”

He rested on his pitchfork handle.

“Didn’t your dad tell you?”

“Well, no, but then Dad and I never spoke much before the disaster. When we did speak, he never talked about the farm, only the bunker.”

“Typical of your dad. Hell, I worked here for him this past four years. Jason knew nothing about farming. He was an engineer by trade and worked for a company that installed the ducting in the tunnel. He’d just finished the job when the disaster struck, and your dad asked him to stay around. At that time, your dad had lost interest in the farm and became obsessed with the bunker, so he spent a lot of time with Jason.”

“Really, you don’t need me here, do you?”

“No offence, but not if you have other things to do, and I’m busy.”

“I’ll see you in the common room when you’re finished.”

“Yeah, I’ll see you there,” he said, then continued on cleaning out the batteries.

Rosa was busy with her broadcasts in the radio room when I arrived, so I carried on to the common room where I met Mary.

“I didn’t know Joseph had worked here for dad this past four years?”

“Well, you wouldn’t know, seeing as how you’ve only just started mixing with everyone.
